Thesis statement to my argument for solar power:
Solar power is a clean, efficient and economic way to produce energy that needs to be adopted worldwide to aid the fight against climate change and reduce our carbon footprint for a healthier planet to hand down to future generations.
Counterargument:
Some readers may believe that solar power is the best choice for an environmentally responsible source of energy, but what about the environmental damage it causes? The solar power industry may argue that the earth would be better off with solar power rather than fossil fuels such as oil. This argument however is flawed. In order for solar power to be effective, there need to be huge fields of solar panels laid out in the sun. These fields are usually in rural areas and deserts where there is not much other development, areas that are typically home to many species of plants and animals. If huge swaths of natural habitat are covered up, shaded by these huge panels, that environment is ruined for wildlife, who’s wellbeing becomes threatened. Oil on the other hand is pumped out of the ground, leaving the surface of the environment largely in its natural state. Anyone who has ever seen an oil pump knows that sunlight falls all around it, leaving the natural wildlife to go about its business of thriving.
Response to counterargument:
Though the argument made by oil industry proponents, that solar fields take up large swaths of land may be true on that note, the truth remains that solar power is less destructive than fossil fuel. The space that solar fields demand does not cause anywhere near the danger that pollution caused by drilling for, pumping and burning oil does. One day the human race will be discover a way to provide energy to society without disturbing the natural environment at all, but until then switching from fossil fuels to solar power is the smartest and kindest thing to do.

Go Solar; Just Do It
Imagine a place where you could go and avoid ever breathing smog. What does that place look like? Is it acres of pasture covered in wildflowers with long green grass blowing in the crisp breeze, or is it a beach covered in fine white sand and swaying palm trees? Imagine being able to breathe air that fresh all of the time. By putting an end to society’s heavy reliance on burning fossil fuels to make our electricity, we could positively affect our air quality. We could achieve this by ditching the fossil fuels and looking forward to the new technologies that are available, like solar power. Solar power is a clean, efficient and economic choice that will reduce our carbon footprint, leading to a healthier planet to hand down to future generations.
The term “future generations” can seem a little impersonal, as if it does not have a an effect on you. “Healthy planet” sounds like something someone could convince themselves they are achieving by recycling their water bottles. Think about it this way, your baby, your grandbaby and all of the children you see should be able to breath clean air. Those little pink lungs inside the chest of that little child deserve to stay pink. Your child or grandchild deserves to be able to grow up and have babies that aren’t at risk for asthma, or aggravated bronchitis, or even cancer or brain damage. I am not kidding.
Driving past a fossil fuel burning power plant conjures up images of nasty smoke stacks pumping tons of exhaust into the atmosphere. Burning coal for example, to make electricity is just not worth it and is the main causes of smog. Smog is that nasty layer of crud in the air that burns the throat and nostrils with each breath. Those filthy smokestacks emit lots of fun stuff, like CO2, about two BILLION tons of it per year, not to mention toxic ash, and SO2 (sulphur dioxide). Those emissions also include mercury, lead and uranium. Those are super toxic heavy metals, the kind that cause brain damage. That is scary. Just ask anyone that lives in, let’s say Los Angeles about the smog and what it is like to breathe it. But there are so many famous wealthy people that live in Los Angeles. No, not even wealth can protect the lungs from charring on a smoggy day.
Sadly, smog creeps into more than the air. In Southern California we are suffering from years of drought, so we pray for rain on a pretty regular basis. The sad thing is that when we finally get rain it has to fall through all of that toxic smog. All of those toxins, particularly sulphur dioxide (SO2) get caught in those lovely little raindrops. Now we have what is called acid rain. These tainted drops of acid rain fall on our crops and into our oceans and rivers. So the smog not only affects the air that we breathe, but the water we drink and food that we eat.
The smog threatens the quality of the air that we breathe and causes the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere to grow. The two billion tons of CO2 that is constantly being pumped into the atmosphere every year is a major contributor to climate change. How does climate change affect us? Isn’t it just the polar bears who have to worry about it? Think of things like extreme drought and endless high temperatures right here at home. This year it has taken until November for Southern California to get some relief from the months of relentless 80 and 90 degree temperatures. It was a brutally hot and dry summer, but the climate in Southern California is not naturally brutal. Global warming due to climate change is to blame for that.
For the southwestern states in particular, isn’t it ludicrous to pollute the air everyone breathes by burning pollutive fossil fuels to make electricity for running fans and air conditioners? People have air conditioners running in their homes and offices because of the hot sun and high heat. Funny isn’t it? There is all this extreme sun day after day that is going to waste. Going to waste? How do you waste the sun? Not harnessing the sun’s abundant power is wasting it. When fossil fuels are burned they pollute the earth, but the oil companies get rich, rich enough to afford to block easy access to solar power and to push the fossil fuel agenda. It is up to us to change anyway.
Try driving by a solar power plant. There is no smoke. There are no disease causing pollutive emissions spewing toxic ash and heavy metals into the air you and your children breathe. It isn’t even ugly, no nasty stained smokestacks billowing with poisonous clouds, just shiny panels worshiping the sun. Invest in solar energy, it’s easy. Start small, be an example to your neighbors. Line your walkway with solar powered lights. Notice how there is no affect on your electricity bill? There is also no smog being produced at some filthy power plant to light those lights. If everyone changed just one power sucking item to solar, it would start to make a difference. You could make a difference.

There's Something About Mary
There’s Something About Mary is a 1998 comedy film. It falls directly under the genre of comedy because it is absolutely hilarious. It also includes sub genres of comedy such as slapstick, dark humor, romantic comedy and screwball comedy. I would have to say that this movie definitely follows the conventions of comedy. It is often visually absurd, it breaks the politically correct norms that people are used to, it’s characters are extremely exaggerated yet eerily reminiscent of people we all have probably run into in our lives, and it has a happy ending. This movie takes situations that could exist in real life and makes them completely over the top, giving the audience a feeling of not only gut busting laughter, but also of relief. Part of what keeps the audience so invested in the movie is that the main characters are likable people who one really wants the best for.
I think every scene in this movie follows the conventions of comedy, every scene seems to hold the element of surprise, or be morally ridiculous, or have the audience feeling uncomfortable like in a situation comedy. While watching this film each scene seems to be more shockingly outrageous than the last, providing that “on the edge of your seat” feeling.
It does not seem to break the conventions of the genre.
I think the intended audience for this film is people between the ages of 17 and up. Because most of the characters are in their 20’s and 30’s it might appeal to that age group for that reason but honestly, comedy, particularly this one is a medicine for anyone with a pulse.

Vote "No" on GMOs
This Australian ad urging people to vote no on the use of GMOs is brief and effective. It exposes
an unpleasant reality and confirms through the use of logos and pathos, what so many people fear about GMOs, that they have negative health effects.
This ad uses logos to engage the audience. The picture of these tumor ridden lab rats is like a dirty secret being unveiled. How can one deny that GMOs are bad for the health of the body when they are looking at the nightmarish results of GMO use on the bodies of these lab rats?
In addition to using logos to provide visual evidence supporting the argument against the use of GMOs, these pictures use pathos to sway the audience by evoking an immediate fear response and tapping into the self preservation instinct. It shows that we cannot control how consuming these GMOs is going to affect us, and that harm is inevitable unless we do everything we can to keep the GMO foods away from us and our loved ones. Who here seeing this ad can turn away feeling comfortable buying food laced with GMOs? I cannot look away and think that it probably isn’t a threat to me. Pathos is not only used to stimulate peoples’ fear response and instinct for self preservation, it it used to call forth empathy. It is painful to see innocent creatures suffering, and even more painful to imagine a loved one suffering. The thought of feeding GMO food to the people you care about, and even the pets that you care for is terrifying. The problem is real.
This ad is attempting to presuade people to act. If I were a voter in Australia and had seen this ad, I would certainly vote no on GMO’s.
